A bittersweet day in Zagrab included a visit here to the Stone Gate where a painting of the Virgin Mary escaped a huge fire in 1731. Now people come here to offer up their thanks and prayers which are inscribed on the walls.
I finally found the Croatia I was looking for (and maybe this guy did too) here in Zadar. It was beautiful, relaxed, and friendly. The old town isn't overrun with tourist shops and there is a really nice hostel by the beach.
71 of these stone faces can be found on the outside of the cathedral. Someone from here told me that they were the faces of the people who lived in the town when that part of the cathedral was being built.
