LaĆ¢youne - Occupied Western Sahara

A great natural setting.

The National Office of Drinking Water. I saw this and went inside to ask if someone could fill my water bottle for a laugh. They did too, in some kind of laboratory! I peaked through the door as they were filling it.

It's mostly Moroccan military and UN here. This must have been an old military building "adapted" for civilian use.

The culprit?

Either this tajine or the tap water in Marrakesh got me really really sick. I think it was the water because this tajine was boiling hot when it was served.

Marrakesh

The food stalls in the main square Djemaa el-Fna

Crowds gather around a story teller in Djemaa el-Fna

A simple Tajine from a street stall. Tajine is the both name of the dish and the cone shaped thing it's cooked in. A Tajine can include many different ingredients, these are just vegetables. I didn't actually eat one because at almost three US dollars these were just too expensive and I felt they were giving me the "tourist price".

The souks in the medina.

Not a scarecrow, just a Jellaba being made I guess. The traditional Moroccan outfit for men and women.

A complete set

The third and final Almohad minaret, the Koutoubia in Marrakesh. Here the original mosque is still attached.

On the other side is the remains of an earlier Almoravid mosque that was torn down because it did not properly align with Mecca (a common problem with the old mosques in Morocco) The former western wall of this mosque became the eastern wall of the new mosque. You can see the mihrab of the old mosque in this picture and also where the open courtyard would have been (the lower left hand corner of the photo)
