Ackee

Ackee is the national fruit of Jamaica, the yellow part is the only part that is edible, the rest is poisonous.

Ackee and Saltfish is the national dish. It is served for breakfast over yams, dumplings, and under-ripe plantains. It looks like and also has the texture of scrambled eggs, but not the taste.

Ackee can be cooked with other things too, this is Ackee and rice, my favorite Ackee dish.

The Ackee fruit is featured on the Jamaican one cent coin. This also happens to be one of the worlds most worthless coins, as it would take 7142 of these to equal one US Dollar! The coin is legal tender but not in general circulation, and most Jamaicans I asked about the coin had no idea of it's existence. I had to get these directly from the Jamaican Central Bank.

Oysters in Port Royal. The bottle contains a hot sauce used on the oysters, and it's really hot!

Typical Jamaican lunch, pumpkin and rice, with chicken and some greens.

Peanut porridge, served in local fastfood places for breakfast and served by Rastas at anytime of the day, sometimes from push carts around the city.

Dead End Beach

This small stretch of beach in Montego Bay really is a dead end. Beyond the wall is the airport runway.
